SEO Contest Bandwagon, Good or Bad!
March 12th, 2008 by philipAn SEO contest is an activity awarding prizes that challenges search engine optimization (SEO) practitioners to rank themselves among the major search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN using certain keyword(s). As a webmaster you probably already came across some of them or even participated in. Some of the major SEO contests organized are the Globalwarming Awareness 2007 (www.seoworldchampionship.com), v7ndotcom elursrebmem, Ambachdotcom, Carcasherdotcom, and more recently the SEOContest2008 where the winner gets $1,000 for ranking number one one on Google.com.
This type of contest is controversial because it often leads to massive amounts of link spamming as participants try to boost the rankings of their pages by any means available. Now the big question is whether it is good or bad to organize SEO Contests. The organizing body of an seocontest2008 competition may hold the activity without promotion of a product or service in mind; or they may organize a contest in order to market something on the Internet. It is surely a good thing in terms of marketing as the SEO contest will bring thousands of backlinks in much shorter time that it would take if link building was done normally, that is, directory submissions, article submissions, bookmarking and so on. The negative side will be the unrelated backlink, spam backlink, poor quality link(though some site build quality link) since most of the participant are webmaster who’s aim only is to win the contest and become popular. For Participants part, they can showcase their skills and potentially discover new techniques and improve himself. So what’s it gonna be, is it good or bad ? to sum it all, SEO Contest are both good and bad, it’s up to the organizer on how they implement the rules and for the participant to build quality links to promote the site.
